Three salvaged American traffic lights by 'Midwest Signal Inc.'
Converted into a suspended pendant with a polished aluminium enclosure that features the cast manufacturers branding. It is fitted with new etched glass screens which diffuse light nicely when illuminated.

Unlike the communist Eastern Bloc countries, lighting design in mid-century U.S.A. benefitted from a free market. Different companies were working at the same time designing and producing similar products for the same market, often with only slight differences in their style. Due to the location we rarely have the opportunity to reclaim and restore light fixtures from the U.S.A., but some of our perennial favourites are the old signal lights that adorned the highways of the midwest. We reconfigure and restore these timeless classics into functional pendant lights, for both residential and commercial use.

Restoration

Where possible we retain the original finish of a light - it is part of its history and emphasises its heritage. However, sometimes leaving a surface as we find it just isn’t possible. Some lights made from non-ferrous metals, such as copper, arrive so severely degraded we need to remove their outer layers to allow any further surface treatment to be applied. We do this with a technique known as ‘aqua blasting’. Water is mixed with glass particles and applied under high pressure to the surface to ‘blast’ the layer of degradation away - leaving the surface clean for the next stage in restoration.

Supplied with 3no. bayonet (B22) lamp holders and 2metres of elephant grey braided power cable and ceiling mounting system. (This comprises two minimal stainless steel suspension wires and ceiling mounts that allow millimetric adjustment.) (If you would prefer another colour cable please just ask).
